The Only Art Museum in Humboldt County: Morris Graves Museum of Art

Less than 20 miles from The Redwood Riverwalk Hotel in Fortuna, the museum’s galleries offer a variety of exhibits that change frequently, as well as musical and dance performances.The permanent collection features paintings by Morris Graves as well as works by other internationally recognized artists. The museum also is home to the Humboldt Artist Gallery and to the Romano Gabriel Sculpture Garden – a collection of wooden sculptures that is unique in the world of folk art.

Weekends are Special at the Museum

  • Arts Alive! The first Saturday of every month admission is free all day. Arts Alive, from 6 – 9 pm, features exhibition receptions, live music, and a wine bar.
  • Art Talk Sundays: The first Sunday of every month at 2 pm, the museum hosts a visiting or local artist who discusses techniques, what inspires the artwork, and its meaning. Art Talk is included with regular museum admission.
  • Afternoon of Dance: The second Sunday of every month at 2 pm, visitors can enjoy an afternoon dance performance at the museum. Afternoon of Dance is included with regular museum admission.
  • Wine & Jazz: The third Sunday of every month from 3 – 5 pm, the museum hosts a performance series featuring Humboldt County jazz musicians. After the performance, visitors are invited to participate in a jam session with the band. Wine & Jazz is included with regular museum admission, wine is available for purchase.

Smithsonian Museum Day

Saturday, September 21, 2019, Morris Graves Museum of Art is participating in Smithsonian Museum Day. Once a year, Smithsonian Magazine hosts this annual event, when over 1,100 museums and cultural institutions across the U.S. offer free general admission. (Visit the Smithsonian website to see all museums participating and download the Museum Ticket.) In addition to the permanent collection and Humboldt Artist Gallery, the featured exhibition at the Morris Graves Museum at that time will be Jack Sewell: Dance Like Nobody is Watching (September 7 – October 27, 2019). Sewell combines representational imagery and abstract expression to create three dimensional figures using steel rods. The works depict “people dancing as if they are free in the moment… moving to their own rhythm, as each of us must do in life.”

Upcoming exhibitions at the Morris Graves Museum of Art are:

  • Junque Arte: 25 Years! This juried show highlights artistic creativity that transforms “un-new” recycled materials into works of art (October 5 – November 25, 2019).
  • The Annual Humboldt Arts Council Member Show is a juried exhibition featuring HAC Artist Members (November 2 – December 15, 2019).
  • Through Humboldt Fog: Atmospheric Watercolors of the North Coast Landscape features works by the Humboldt Open Air Watercolor Painters (November 30, 2019 – January 12, 2020).
