One of the sure signs of spring is the lovely daffodil, and Northern California celebrates this time-honored flower with its very own “mini-festival”, the Daffodils By The River Flower Show in Fortuna. Held over two days, Saturday, March 28 from 1-5pm and Sunday, March 29 from 10am-4pm at the Fortuna River Lodge Conference Center. Hosted by the Fortuna Garden Club, this very popular flower show has free admission and something for everyone who enjoys the beauty of daffodils. Come for the flowers, live music, art exhibit, children activities and even the opportunity to take home your own potted daffodils.

If you are a running aficionado or just a fan, you need to prepare for one of the premier running events in California! The Avenue of The Giants Marathon will be held Sunday, May 3, 2020 in Weott, CA. The event features a Marathon, Half-Marathon and 10K run. This year’s marathon will also serve as the Western Regional Championship race of the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). As noted by Runner’s World Magazine, “The Avenue of the Giants Marathon is one of the most scenic courses in the country.” The race takes place on “The Avenue of the Giants” in Humboldt Redwoods State Park with giant “old growth” redwoods as spectators, and follows both Bull Creek and the Eel River in opposite directions.

Thirty-two brave “guinea pigs” signed up as the very first participants. Since that inauspicious beginning, the marathon has grown exponentially, and is now a major event certified and sanctioned by USATF (United States of America Track & Field), and is also a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon. The marathon has been hosted by the Six Rivers Running Club (SRRC), centered in Humboldt County.
